How To Enjoy Nail Art, Minimize Disappointment, & Learn From Failure

You are not alone!  We have all felt frustration working on a new nail art technique!  A string of failures (real or perceived) can be disheartening.  Here are a few helpful hints.

Check your emotional thermostat.  Are you up to a challenge or feeling hesitant or vulnerable?  Choose your technique accordingly.  Stay in within your skill level in low mood situations for an uplift.  Stretch out on your good days for glowing pride.

Allow yourself to try.  Allow yourself to fail.  Don't over-think it.  A fresh start is just an acetone-soaked cottonball away!

Prepare by familiarizing yourself with a new technique.  Watch multiple nail art videos on the technique you are wanting to try.  Gather supplies and have them at the ready beforehand.

Swatch it!  Practice your idea on a fake nail, swatch stick, a nail art mat, or the back of a plastic spoon.  You will find yourself adjusting your color choices or swapping out tools--before you've committed to your fingernail. (For special occasions I might work out the design this way a week before actually executing the design on my nails.)

Make sure you have ample time, an organized or dedicated workspace is helpful, and minimize distractions (an empty bladder is a must!)  I like painting my nails after my household has gone to bed.

Consider your "Nail Fail" a learning experience. Try being ultra-constructive about your nail fails.  What IS good about it?  Repeat your idea/technique, and you will be shocked at the improvement.  Afterall, you've already worked out many of the kinks on the 1st try!

It isn't as bad as you think.  Artists tend to be overly-critical of their own work!  Show them off.  Believe when others praise you.  Steer clear of social media sites bent on nail shaming (by the way the nail praising groups are moderated by the same people so you are still risking negativity).  Polish It Off! is my Facebook group.

Quick Fix:  If you really wreck a mani and don't have the patience or time to start over, sponge chunky glitter over the nail, or paint over it with crackle finish polish to completely obscure the design beneath!

Develop "go-to" manicures that you have plenty of practice with the polish and technique...in case new inspiration doesn't come.  This is my no-fail, newbie technique video:  https://youtu.be/tyJrs103tQU
